How To Customize Thesis 404 Page in WordPress

by Editor

thesis-404A page displays a 404 page when the page has been deleted or moved due to change in permalinks. And because of this a user normally leaves the page or closes the tab, if they don’t find what they are actually looking for. This will effect your blog readership and also search engine traffic. Yes, you can also loose your blog search engine ranking, if there are too many 404 pages. Search engines extremely hates 404 page. And a solution to this, would be to redirect that 404 page to the updated link/page or create a useful 404 page, so you don’t loose your blog readers.

If you’re using Thesis Theme on your WordPress blog, thesis will provide you a basic 404 page with a link back to your homepage, which doesn’t look that resourceful. And a user would normally leave your blog, without even searching for the content on your blog. You can check your Thesis 404 page by adding a 404 at the end of your domain [your-domain.com/404]

Thesis Theme for WordPress: Options Galore and a Helpful Support Community

It’s possible to customize your Thesis 404 page by adding a search box or a list of recently published articles, which will help your blog visitor to search for that content or which is related. You can pimp your Thesis 404 page in 2 ways by following the tutorial below.

Method: 1  – Customize Thesis 404 Page using Openhook

1. Install the Openhook plugin and search for 404 title and content from the dropdown menu.

2. Select 404 title fom dropdown and add a custom Title for your Thesis 404 page. And don’t forget to check the “checkbox” to remove the default title.

3. Then select 404 content from dropdown and add your custom code. You can add a custom search box, archives or a list of popular post.

You can check my custom Thesis 404 content below where I display recently published post.
<h4>Don’t worry! You can check out the <a href="http://www.iblognet.com/" rel="none">home page</a> for recent updates or try your luck below!</h4>
<h3>Recently Published:</h3>
<ul>
<?php wp_get_archives(‘type=postbypost&limit=10’); ?>
</ul>
You can also add a custom search box widget provided by Google from here, which you can embed to your Thesis 404 page. That’s it! You’re done.

Method: 2  – Customizing Thesis 404 page using custom-functions.php

Go to Thesis > Custom File Editor and select custom-functions.php from drop down. And add the following code.
/* Custom 404 Title*/
function custom_404_title() {
?>
<strong>YOUR 404 PAGE TITLE HERE</strong>
<?
}
remove_action(’thesis_hook_404_title’, ’thesis_404_title’);
add_action(’thesis_hook_404_title’, ’custom_404_title’);

/* Custom 404 Content*/
function custom_404_content() {
?>
<p><strong>YOUR 404 PAGE CONTENT HERE</strong></p>
<?
}
remove_action(’thesis_hook_404_content’, ’thesis_404_content’);
add_action(’thesis_hook_404_content’, ’custom_404_content’);
You can change the 404 Page Title and Content as I said above in method 1. Save the file and that’s it you have finally created a resourceful 404 page. Other than recent post and search box widget you can also add an archive list, popular posts or a contact page. Just be creative, you can customize your 404 page the way you want.
