Get Ready to Register your .XXX Domain Name

by Editor

On Friday, March 18th 2011, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved a new top-level domain (TLD) name ending with .XXX with the support of 9 of 16 board members of ICANN weighing balance equally between ‘for’ and ‘against’. If you have previously pre-reserved your .XXX Domain name then its time to register for it. The launch period of .XXX officially starts next Wednesday, September 7th, 2011.

The period of registration is as follows:

1. Sunrise A
If you are a member of the Sponsored Community (the adult industry) and have a registered trademark or want to request matching domain names to ones you already own, you should apply during the Sunrise A period [Sep 7th, 2011 to Oct 28th, 2011]

What is Sunrise A?

Sunrise A is the time when trademark owners and other IP holders can apply for .XXX domain names. This period will run for 52 days starting September 7, 2011.
Sunrise A is aimed at applicants from within the adult Sponsored Community. In general, these applicants may participate in Sunrise A based on one of the following two qualifications:

  • Applicants are engaged in eligible commerce for registration under an issued, qualifying trademark registration and they satisfy the adult Sponsored Community definition, or;
  • Applicants own and operate an existing domain name in another gTLD or ccTLD (in connection with eligible commerce for registration in the .XXX) and they satisfy the adult Sponsored Community definition. This process is often referred to as Grandfathering” (from an existing TLD).

2. Sunrise B
If you are not a member of the Sponsored Community (the adult industry) and have registered trademarks, you should apply to reserve during the Sunrise B period [Sep 7th, 2011 to Oct 28th, 2011]. This period offers the opportunity to protect your mark for a one-time fee.

What is Sunrise B?
Sunrise B is the time when trademark owners and other IP holders can apply to opt-out of .XXX. This period will run for 52 days starting September 7, 2011.
Sunrise B is aimed at applicants from outside of the adult Sponsored Community. These applicants are owners of a qualifying trademark registration, who seek to reserve names in order to ensure that those names are not registered as domain names by others in .XXX . At the close of the Sunrise Period, if no conflicting application by a Sunrise A applicant has been made, these names will be reserved from registration (blocked).

3. Landrush
If you are a member of the Sponsored Community (the adult industry) and wish to purchase other domain names that you may not have a trademark on or a website for, particularly those you may have entered on your “Wish List” during Pre-reservation, you should apply during the Landrush period [Nov 8th, 2011 to Nov 25th, 2011] for those .XXX domain names. Landrush starts on November 8th.

What is Landrush?

Landrush is a limited-time opportunity for those who don’t qualify for Sunrise A but want to secure a valued .XXX domain name and avoid first come, first served General availability risks.
The Landrush period will run for approximately 18 days starting on November 8, 2011. During this limited period, only those members of the adult Sponsored Community can apply for .XXX domain names. Apart from being a member of the adult Sponsored Community, there are no trademark or pre-ownership rights requirements during this phase of the launch.
There is no first come, first served ranking during Landrush. At the end of the Landrush period, those .XXX domain names with a single applicant will be automatically allocated. However, those .XXX domain names with more than one applicant will proceed to a closed mini-auction between the competing parties only.
Landrush is designed for those members of the adult Sponsored Community that want to secure premium .XXX domain names and guarantees either member the chance to purchase premium .XXX domain names or be involved in a closed auction to bid for .XXX domain names.

4. General
General Availability begins December 6, 2011, and remaining .XXX domain names will be allocated to applicants on a first come, first served basis.
All members of the adult Sponsored Community can apply without pre-existing rights or qualifications unlike in the previous launch periods.

You will need to apply for .XXX domain names, and pay the fees for those domain names, directly through your preferred registrar. Log into your Pre-reservation account and download the list of domain names that you provided as a part of your Pre-reservation Service account. For more info visit:
